The difference between cervical mucus plug and leucorrhea

Cervical mucus plug and leucorrhea are two different kinds of vaginal secretions. Cervical mucus plug is a thick gel-like substance unique to pregnancy, while leucorrhea is normal vaginal secretion of non-pregnant women.

1. Different ingredients

Cervical mucus plug is mainly composed of mucus secreted by cervical glands, contains a large amount of glycoproteins and immunoglobulins, and has a texture similar to jelly or gel. Leucorrhea contains a mixture of vaginal epithelial exfoliated cells, cervical mucus, vaginal secretions and microorganisms, and appears as a milky white or transparent liquid.

2. Different functions

The main function of the cervical mucus plug is to seal the cervical opening during pregnancy and form a physical barrier to prevent bacteria from ascending to infect the fetus. Leucorrhea has the physiological functions of lubricating the vagina, maintaining acid-base balance, and removing metabolic waste. Its secretion volume is related to changes in estrogen levels.

3. Different appearance periods

Cervical mucus plugs only appear during pregnancy, begin to form and persist after 6 weeks of pregnancy, and will be discharged as the cervix dilates before delivery. Leucorrhea lasts throughout a woman's reproductive period. During the menstrual cycle, the amount of secretion increases during ovulation, and the texture appears stringy like egg white.

4. Character changes are different

The stable cervical mucus plug is usually white or light yellow in color. When it is discharged near delivery, it will be in the shape of a lump and may be bloodshot. The characteristics of leucorrhea are easily affected by hormones. It appears transparent and elastic during ovulation, becomes turbid and sticky during the luteal phase, and may appear yellow-green or tofu-like during abnormal infection.

5. Different pathological meanings

Premature loss of cervical mucus plug may indicate cervical insufficiency requiring medical evaluation. When leucorrhea has an obvious odor, color change, or is accompanied by itching, it may be related to vaginitis, cervicitis and other diseases. Common pathogens include Candida, Trichomonas or bacterial vaginosis.

It is recommended that women regularly observe changes in vaginal secretions. If cervical mucus plugs are discharged during pregnancy, the time should be recorded and reported to the doctor promptly. If leucorrhea is abnormal during non-pregnancy, routine leucorrhea examination is required. Keep your vulva clean and dry every day, and choose breathable cotton underwear to avoid excessive washing that damages the balance of vaginal flora. If it is accompanied by abdominal pain, fever, or persistent abnormal secretions, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible for a clear diagnosis.
