Hyperthyroidism shares some similarities with anxiety disorders. It is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by a hypermetabolic syndrome caused by elevated levels of thyroid hormones in the blood. Typical symptoms of hyperthyroidism include palpitations, heat intolerance, excessive sweating, tremors in the hands, irritability, and other signs of increased metabolism. Anxiety disorders are neurological and mental abnormalities; individuals suffering from these disorders may also experience symptoms such as palpitations, mild tremors, irritability, and restlessness. However, there are differences between hyperthyroidism and anxiety disorder, and the main distinctions include the following points::

    1. Symptoms such as palpitations and increased heart rate in people with anxiety disorders improve after they sleep, whereas patients with hyperthyroidism still experience a rapid heart rate during sleep.

    2. Patients with anxiety disorders do not exhibit the thyroid enlargement and exophthalmos commonly seen in those with hyperthyroidism.

    3. In patients with anxiety disorders, thyroid function tests are normal, whereas in those with hyperthyroidism, thyroid function is characterized by decreased TSH levels and increased T3 and T4 levels.
