Judging from the practical experience of frontline emergency work, first aid is essentially the front-end implementation of the emergency health system. It connects the entire chain from public prevention, on-site treatment to follow-up intervention and even policy optimization. It is a key link in transforming emergency health requirements into actual life protection.
Last month, Uncle Zhang, who was doing morning exercises in our community, suffered a myocardial infarction. There happened to be a young man who had participated in street first aid training standing next to him. He immediately applied chest compressions and obtained the AED at the public point at the entrance of the community for rescue. By the time 120 arrived, the uncle had already restored his spontaneous heart rate. You see, in the emergency health system, public first aid equipment has been deployed in advance, and regular public science training is provided to the public. These preliminary preventive work ultimately rely on on-site first aid actions to be implemented. Without these critical minutes, no matter how many plans and equipment are deployed, it will be in vain.
There are also different opinions in the industry. Some experts believe that the popularization of first aid science for ordinary people does not need to involve too much emergency health knowledge. It is enough to master the core operations and save lives first in emergencies before talking about other things. However, those of us who have been trained on the front line for five or six years think that first aid actions are "skills" and the emergency health knowledge behind them is "Tao". Failure to understand the basic logic can easily cause secondary injuries. Not long ago, I received a 120-degree burn patient. The parents tried to rescue the child and smeared soy sauce and toothpaste all over the wound. When they went to the hospital for debridement, the child was shivering in pain. The originally shallow second-degree wound was almost deepened by foreign matter contamination. This is a problem that only knows "to deal with it quickly" but does not understand the basic emergency health regulations.
Many people think that first aid ends when they are sent to the hospital. In fact, pre-hospital first aid records are also the core basis for subsequent clinical emergency health intervention. For example, what is the golden time for thrombolysis in patients with myocardial infarction, and whether patients with stroke vomited or aspirated during the onset of the disease. These first-time observations and records directly determine the efficiency of emergency treatment, and can even affect subsequent rehabilitation effects.
Taking it a step further, the collection of scattered first aid cases can in turn fill the loopholes in the emergency health system. Last summer, there were three emergency cases of heat stroke among outdoor construction workers in our jurisdiction. We sorted out the onset time and working environment of these cases and fed them back to the disease control and housing construction departments. In less than half a month, we issued mandatory requirements prohibiting outdoor work in the open air during high temperatures above 35 degrees. Cooling supply points were also set up at the entrances of each construction site. After that, the number of heat stroke cases dropped by 80% throughout the summer.
To put it bluntly, if the emergency health system is compared to a protective net that protects public life, first aid is the frontmost contact point of the net. It is the first one to support people when an accident occurs. It is also the one that feeds back the force stress and helps weave the net denser and stronger. The two are always tied together and cannot be disassembled.
