To be clear, flexibility training itself is not an independent competitive sport officially recognized by the international and domestic authorities, but it is a core basic training module that cannot be avoided in all sports. It is even the key to determining the upper limit of performance in many projects.

Many people think it can be regarded as a sport, but they are actually "misled" by the highly ornamental flexibility displays in various events - the back leg balance in rhythmic gymnastics, the underwater splits in synchronized swimming, and the sky kick in martial arts routines. The completion of these movements is all supported by years of flexibility training. After watching too much, you will inevitably think that "flexibility" is a separate competition category.

It’s not that there are no voices supporting it as an independent event. Nowadays, there are special competition units for flexibility in folk fitness events and youth physical fitness challenges. For example, the flexibility scoring items in the seated forward bending extreme challenge and yoga posture competition only assess flexibility ability and have clear competition rules and scoring standards. Many fitness enthusiasts and even grassroots event organizers have long accepted that such special competitions are independent mass sports.

When I provided physical assistance to the sprinters of the provincial team two years ago, I saw a young team member who was practicing 100 meters. He had enough strength and explosive power, but his stride length was always smaller than that of athletes of the same level. After a long search, I found that the problem was that the hip flexors were not flexible enough when exerting force. He couldn't move his legs, so he added two months of dynamic flexibility training. His stride length increased by 7 centimeters, and his 100-meter time improved by 0.28 seconds. At that time, he complained every day that he thought flexibility training was "useless and boring". If he had known that his performance could be improved, he would not have taken advantage of it during training.

Judging from the official list of competition events, whether it is the official event list of the International Olympic Committee or the General Administration of Sport of China, flexibility training is not separately listed as an official competition event. It is essentially the four basic physical training modules alongside strength training, endurance training, and speed training. No matter whether you are a professional athlete or an ordinary fitness person, you can't escape it - office workers who sit for a long time pull their chest and shoulders to relieve chest hunchback, and aunties who dance square dance press their legs to prevent swaying when walking. They are all doing flexibility training in essence.

In fact, there is really no need to worry about whether it is an independent sport. For ordinary sports enthusiasts like you and me, it can help you exercise without straining, walk without stiffness, and bend down to pick things up without strain. This is the greatest significance of flexibility training. As for status and other things, it is not as important as physical comfort.
