In fact, to put it bluntly, daily care for the elderly is not just a few rigid rules and regulations listed on the Internet. The core is to follow the physical condition and living habits of the elderly, integrating physiological care, emotional care, and social function support into the small things every day.
I have been working as a nurse in a community nursing home for almost 5 years. I have seen too many family members come up and ask, "Is it okay to just pay attention to eating and sleeping so as not to fall?" I just met a family in the past two months. The son hired a live-in aunt for his old mother who lived alone. The requirements were very clear: three nutritious meals a day, blood pressure measurement three times at regular intervals, and someone to help when going out. As a result, the aunt has been doing this for three months, but the old man has lost three kilograms, and he always complains of chest tightness. Why should he go to the hospital to check? There were no organic problems. Later, when we came to talk, we found out that the old man used to walk around the community twice every morning and chat with the old neighbor for 10 minutes. The aunt was afraid that she would fall and follow her every time.
Of course, it does not mean that it is right to completely follow the wishes of the elderly. There are indeed different opinions in the industry. Some people think that nursing care should give priority to the subjective wishes of the elderly. There is no need to change the habits of a lifetime when they are old. Some people think that health and safety must be given priority. Unreasonable habits must be corrected when they need to be corrected. Take the pickles that many elderly people love to eat. For example, if they are not allowed to touch at all, the elderly will not be able to eat, they will get angry every time, and they will be fed every time. This is indeed a burden for the elderly with high blood pressure and poor kidney function. We usually discuss with the elderly in advance, and they can eat two small plates a week, with white porridge to satisfy their cravings. This will not affect the indicators too much, and it will not make the elderly feel that they are not being controlled at all.
If you encounter an elderly person who is disabled and bedridden, the focus of care will naturally be on physical care, such as turning over every two hours to avoid pressure sores, paying attention to whether there is any redness in the crevices of the skin when wiping the body, and raising the head of the bed 30 degrees when feeding. Last time, a family member fed glutinous rice balls to an old father who was bedridden. He was in a hurry to go to work and fed too fast, causing him to choke on his trachea and send him to the emergency room. These are all details hidden in daily care. People who have not practiced it would never think of it.
To put it bluntly, there is no fixed list of daily care. When you come in every day, you should first check whether the bedding is damp, ask if you slept well last night, ask a few more questions when you see the old man's expression is wrong, and accompany him downstairs to chat with his old friend if he is able to move around. Putting these little things together is the most practical daily care.
